SD/PEN regularly selects members at random and profiles their background and experience in an interview-style blog post. These are valuable opportunities for members to introduce themselves to other members and prospective clients through this newsletter and on SD/PEN’s website and social media outlets. This profile features Jennifer George Maybin, an accomplished medical editor and writer and owner of J G Maybin, LLC.
How do you describe what you do to someone whom you’ve just met at a networking function?
I edit and write medical training materials, journal articles, managed market materials, and textbooks and their ancillaries.
What made you decide to become a professional editor?
I was an English major and started out as an editor for an automotive magazine. I later transitioned to medical editing and writing because it was more interesting and challenging.
What accomplishment are you most proud of professionally?
I am most proud of receiving certification as an Editor in the Life Sciences by the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences (BELS).
Describe a volunteer activity or cause you are involved in.
My volunteer activities are as a literacy tutor for ESL adults and as a reader for Read Aloud. Both of these fit my desire to increase reading and writing skills among children and adults.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be an astronaut, but my teachers said that they didn’t make suits to fit women! Imagine that. You can guess my age from that statement. I have since realized that my claustrophobia would be an obstacle to that career.
