Tour of the New San Diego Central Library

NOTE: Special day and time!

San Diego Central LibraryWhat has nearly 500,000 square feet, nine stories—including a two-story high school—a beautiful auditorium for concerts featuring a wall made of books, and free underground parking?

The new San Diego Central Library, that’s what! In lieu of January’s regular Thursday evening program meeting, SD/PEN is headed to the new library on Saturday, January 11, for a one-hour guided tour. The tour begins at 11:00 a.m. sharp, so please arrive at least 10 minutes early. After the tour, join other SD/PEN members and their guests for lunch and discussion at a nearby restaurant, if you wish.

The library features many technological, cultural, and educational treasures:
  • GPS-based floor plans
  • An app that provides on-the-go access to the catalog, account information, downloadable media (audiobooks and e-books), and more
  • Nearly 300 digital devices, including workstations, iPads, iPad Minis, Chromebooks, and Kindle and Sony e-readers
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Rare book collection
  • World-class art installations
  • Award-winning literacy programs

December Networking Night Recap

A Festive Night With SDW/EG

By Shirley Clukey

While Christmas music played at the County Health Services Complex on December 19, SD/PEN members joined San Diego Writers and Editors Guild members for holiday fun and an abundant potluck dinner. We ate and talked and continued to munch during several door-prize drawings for books written by SDW/EG members. Three or four SD/PEN members won great titles. We also had the opportunity to buy SDW/EG’s first two annual anthologies, a project driven by retiring SDW/EG president, Ruth Leyse-Wallace.

The get-together laid a foundation for future networking between the sister organizations, and the evening’s activities provided a pleasant interlude in a hectic holiday season.

  • Up-to-date training about work flow and business practices, including resume writing, rates and billing, getting and keeping clients, time management, and taxes
  • A 200-page manual of information and resources, including sample correspondence and invoices, type codes, copyediting checklist, and more
  • Hands-on exercises and personal attention from the instructor
  • Insight into the publishing process
  • Access to a private LinkedIn group for bootcamp alumni for additional information and job leads

President's Message

Dear Members,

When my husband announced his retirement, which meant our long-planned move to Washington state would soon happen, I told the board of directors that I would be leaving office at the end of 2013. In our search for new board members, we discovered that no one was interested in serving as president or treasurer, so I decided to stay onboard (pun intended) until my move in April, in the hope that we would be able to find or prepare leaders for those positions during that time.

Various circumstances have since caused my family to change our move date to March, and with this increased time crunch, I need to step down from my position at the end of this month. It’s difficult to leave for many reasons, and if we weren’t moving, I would love to stay on, but I can’t. It’s time for me to let go.

I’ve made lovely friends within SD/PEN over the last few years. These friendships I hope will last despite the miles soon to be between us. Especially precious are those I’ve had the closest association with—my fellow board members, who have been so supportive and willing to work and share their insights. I hope you’ll take a moment to thank them, as you have so kindly thanked me.

And it’s not just the board members who have been so gracious. I can never say thanks enough to you, the members, who have so willingly volunteered your services—from bringing refreshments, writing meeting recaps, serving on committees, assisting with workshops, helping to set up and break down before and after meetings (even without being asked), and so much more!

This will be my last message for the newsletter. I wish each of you a wonderful and happy new year filled with success!

Best wishes always,
Shirley
