Grammar Points and Practices
What do grammar geeks, word nerds, and style sticklers have in common? They’re all eagerly anticipating an evening of grammar talk and testing (voluntary, of course) at the next SD/PEN program meeting.
|
|
Bobbie Felix, a Grammar Lab instructor for UCSD Extension’s Copyediting Certificate Program, will make all your grammar dreams come true. Not only will she be bringing a satchel full of her own grammar musts, but she’s also taken requests. Bobbie will be answering your specific grammar questions and covering grammar and style topics you said you'd like to know more about. Mark your calendars for Thursday, September 18, and come enjoy this fun, yet educational, event.
RSVP by replying to this email no later than noon on Thursday, September 18.

Summer is over and it’s time to focus on your business. Want a way to add great marketing value to your resume? Join the SD/PEN Board of Directors!
Not only is your SD/PEN board service a superb addition to your resume, your volunteer service is noted in your online membership directory listing and on the website’s Board of Directors page. It’s a rewarding way to contribute to SD/PEN, to get to know other members, and to sharpen your professional skills—as well as a great way to influence the direction of SD/PEN.
We are recruiting for the slate of 2015 board members and will hold our elections at the November 20 Field Trip/Program Meeting. You may nominate yourself or someone else you think would be a good representative for SD/PEN.
Help keep SD/PEN running strong. According to our bylaws, as a nonprofit 501(c)(6), we must fill the positions of president and treasurer to conduct business next year—now is not the time to be shy. Below are the board positions with returning members listed. Open positions are in blue.

Clearstory Creative Digital Publishers
2015 Board of Directors Elections
|
|
If you’ve read the “2015 Board of Directors” piece above, you know that we’ll be holding elections for next year’s slate of directors at the November 20 Field Trip/Program Meeting. Come, vote, and find out who your new SD/PEN board members will be.
After a little snacking and mingling, we’ll turn the floor over to Debara Medina, CEO and owner of Clearstory Creative Digital Publishers, our host for this fabulous field trip, to discover the behind-the-scenes workings of a book publisher. At Clearstory, if you dream it, Debara makes it.
Clearstory celebrates everyone’s story. Debara is committed to providing the highest quality digital printing, finishing, bookbinding, and innovation to anyone—from businesses to individuals—with a passion for telling their story with sophistication. Clearstory, a minority- and woman-owned creative digital print publisher, serves the self-publishing and photo-book printing industries as well as performs an array of business printing.
All their work is done in house at their state-of-the-art facility. Wait until you see the machine Debara calls “The Mother Ship”! Debara brought her experience working with high-tech companies to Clearstory as she personally evaluated and purchased each piece of equipment. Your facilities tour will include her explanation of the machines and how they’re used at Clearstory.
Clearstory is conveniently located at 8320 Miramar Mall, San Diego, 92121, just east of I-805 at the Miramar Road exit.
The conference room at Clearstory is on the second floor, up a flight of stairs. If you will be needing an accommodation to attend the meeting, please let us know when you RSVP.

Good news! Membership fees for 2015 will remain at $65—this will be the fifth year at that rate. (SD/PEN last raised fees in 2011 from $55 to $65.)
We are constantly trying to find ways to offset rising costs, and we’ve managed to do that this year by making fees a flat $65, regardless of when you join or renew (no more early-bird rates). Joining and renewing for 2015 will be available beginning in November 2014. Stay tuned for the official announcement.

V. Kay Sweet rejoined the SD/PEN Board of Directors on September 11, 2014, as our co-vice president of programs and education. We’re excited to have her back, contributing her many talents to this job-sharing position with Patricia Harriman.
Kay has over 20 years of experience in the corporate world that includes the positions of travel services manager, office manager, executive assistant to the president, and VIP meeting planner. After leaving corporate work, she operated her own business as a private fiduciary. Kay has a certificate from UCSD in Meeting Planning. She planned many VIP meetings, including board of directors meetings, out-of-town retreats, and golf tournaments.
Kay served on the board of directors of the San Diego Business Travel Association for 10 years. She held the positions of president, chairman (for two years), and secretary. During this time she secured sponsorships for many meetings and workshops for its members who were travel managers.
Kay operated a copyediting business from her home comprising work on master's theses and various reports for researchers. Kay holds a certificate in Copyediting from UCSD.
In 2012 Kay served on the board of directors of SD/PEN. As a director, she worked on the alignment committee and also on the telephone committee, polling members regarding their opinions on a variety of topics.
Kay enjoys organizing things. Words and language are also a passion of hers. Kay says, “Getting just the right word to describe a thought, emotion, scene, or situation can be very satisfying (and time consuming). Developing this interest is my focus.”

Dear Members,
New life. As in all things, we must move forward. At the November 20 Field Trip/Program Meeting, you’ll have the opportunity to vote on the slate for the 2015 Board of Directors. As an SD/PEN member, you will be welcoming new directors to join the returning members of the 2014 Board.
We are currently seeking nominations for various open positions. Please check out the “2015 Board of Directors” box for detailed information on how you might contribute to this endeavor. Look around—and look inside—and you could find the perfect candidate to nominate.
My name isn’t on the list of returning board members. I have served on the board for three years and I think it’s time to let some of the rest of you have this fabulous experience. (Plus, my family just welcome a new Shih Tzu puppy into our lives. He is already showing enormous potential as an editorial assistant.)
We have two great program meetings coming up on September 18 and November 20 on grammar and on book publishing, respectively. I know if you miss either meeting, you’ll regret it when you read the recaps.
Don’t forget, I’m always reachable at maw_witt@hotmail.com to answer any questions you may have.
I look forward to seeing you soon.
Melanie Astaire Witt
